Welcome to Stellenbosch – South Africa’s second oldest town and most inspiring wine, food, art and cultural destination.

Once upon a time – 1925 to be precise – Abraham Izak Perold, the very first professor of viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch, had a look at grape variants Pinot Noir and Cinsaut and thought to himself, “Hey, let me give viticulture a bit of a switch up by cultivating these two grapes together to see what will happen,” and voila, Pinotage came to life.

The relatively close proximity of the L’Avenir, Kanonkop, Simonsig, and Beyerskloof allows the visitor easy access to the best Pinotage wines in South Africa within a day-trip.

Start your day at L’Avenir Wine Farm

L’Avenir is nestled in what is known as the ‘golden triangle’ of the Winelands and produces top of the range Pinotage wines, which have been awarded internationally. L’Avenir effortlessly embraces its French and South African heritage with a strong focus on Chenin Blanc and Pinotage.

Enjoy a wine tasting on the cozy stoep or in the tasting room.

If you are looking for more than just a wine tasting, why not try the cheese and wine pairing tasting. L’Avenir offers cheese and/or Charcuterie Platters as well as a selection of sandwiches from a seasonal blackboard.

L’Avenir Country Lodge is an intimate, 4-star lodge located on a working wine estate, just minutes from the historic town of Stellenbosch. Features include a rim-flow pool overlooking the lakes, home-cooked breakfast on the deck, complimentary wine tasting, mountain biking and trail running trails through the vineyards and a cozy fireplace ideal for sipping Pinotage on winter afternoons.

L’Avenir offers a helipad (in exclusive partnership with Cape Town Helicopters); Hands-on-Garden illustrating vineyard management and venues suitable for weddings or conferences.

2nd Stop, Kanonkop

Kanonkop is a fourth-generation family estate on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain and has been handed down from father to son for over 40 years. The farm is widely known as the first to produce a certified block of Pinotage and this variety still makes up 50% of all red wine plantings for which Kanonkop is renowned.

Mon – Fri from 09h00 till 17h00, Sat 09h00 till 14h00 (Closed on Sundays and religious public holidays).

Wine & art are both commodities with the same intrinsic values. Enjoyment, pleasure and nice to have are but some of the similarities. Both can also be viewed as an investment in pleasure. Allow some time to browse Kanonkop Wine Estate’s investment art gallery, situated inside one of their oak maturation cellars. 

Kanonkop offers a traditional Cape Snoek barbeque all year round – minimum 15 people – booking essential. In summer we also offer cheese plates to be enjoyed under the oaks with a glass of red wine.

 

Next stop – Simonsig Wine Estate

Simonsig Wine Estate is synonymous with the history of the South African wine industry, the Stellenbosch wine region, and the Malan family name. These elements are intertwined in this family-owned farm, where the late Frans Malan produced the first bottle of our much-loved Kaapse Vonkel, South Africaʼs first Méthode Cap Classique made in the classic bottle-fermented style. Simonsig also has an award-winning history with Pinotage.

Open seven days per week from Mon – Fri: 10h00 till 18h00. Saturdays & Public Holidays: 09h00 till 17h00 and Sundays: 09h00 till 16h00

Cuvée Restaurant captures the Malan family’s hospitality. Guests can experience the relaxed Cape Winelands atmosphere and traditional hearty meals with a modern flair. Breakfast and lunch can be enjoyed with our famed Kaapse Vonkel under the oak trees, or cozy up to the fireplace in winter with a glass of Redhill Pinotage.

On Sundays, guests can enjoy a traditional lazy Sunday afternoon with a three-course set menu, served feast style to the table, while the kids play outside.
