This Mandela Day | Give Responsibly

Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.

It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.

It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy; it is a global movement to honour his life’s work and to change the world for the better.

This year we are joining forces with Heartflow, Stellenbosch Municipality, Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch, Feeding in Action and Stellenbosch Night Shelter to Give Responsibly.

What is the Give Responsibly Initiative?

Heartflow’s Give Responsibly initiative, which is endorsed by the Stellenbosch Municipality, produces coupons which can be exchanged for a nutritious meal or a night’s stay at the Stellenbosch Night Shelter. It is an easy and effective way to help.

How can you Give Responsibly?

Simply buy paper-based coupons from participating shops and pass them on to homeless people instead of offering money.

Coupons are available at the following shops:
Deluxe Coffeeworks
Van Schaik Bookstore
Stellenbosch Wes Lewende Lote
Stellenbosch Welgelegen NG Gemeente
PostNet Stellenbosch
Häzz Coffee
Stellenbosch Wine Routes
Kwikspar (Neelsie, Paul Roos, Jonkershoek)
Superspar Die Boord
Pick ‘n Pay Express at the BP Garage
Stelkor Pharmacy
Moederkerk Kruiskerk
Outdoor Escape
Maties Gymnasium

How else can you help this Mandela Day?

Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS)

This Mandela Day, step up and give a little love to the animals in our community (and the wonderful men and women who look after them) by offering the AWSS 67 minutes of your time to:

  • Help with kennel repairs
  • Restore cat scratching posts
  • Walk the dogs
  • Assist with general maintenance and gardening

Grab your friends, family or colleagues and spend a fun, rewarding hour (or more) with the AWWS team on Monday, 18 July between 10am and 3pm. Bookings are essential, so book your spot here.

Stellenbosch Feeding in Action

This Mandela Day, consider spending 67 minutes of your time making fresh sandwiches or soup (then frozen in 2-litre containers) and delivering your contributions to:

Woodmill
Ground Floor 9b
Vredenburg Road, Devonpark
Stellenbosch

Another great idea? Help Feeding in Action to assist more families in need by getting a group of friends together to make ‘Jars of Hope’.

One ‘Jar of Hope’, which provides a meal for a family of four, includes:
250 ml Soup Mix (1 cup)
250 ml (1 cup)
1 Packet of Soup Powder
250 ml Lentils
250 ml Pasta (for example, macaroni)
1 Stock Cube
