Our children are the rock on which our future will be built, our greatest asset as a nation. They will be the leaders of our country, the creators of our national wealth who care for and protect our people.
Mandela is called the father of the nation perhaps not only for his role in liberating South Africans but also for the love and support he has shown to its children. And as a community and a nation, we have proven that we are resilient, generous, and kind. Right now ECD facilities need our help to open up with the necessary PPE. When parents were at home during the lockdown, many of them opted not to pay fees for the period that their children did not go to the ECD facility. This meant that (as with many other businesses) the owners/principals and their teachers were without income for the period.
The added requirements to become workplace-ready further increase the financial burden on the facilities. Social distancing might require that fewer children will be accommodated in the existing facilities. The unfortunate reality is however that some children will end up not being in structured care.
The aim of Mandela Day this year is to assist struggling ECD facilities to become compliant with the Workplace Readiness requirements for facilities. Although Mandela Day is a day that promotes 67 minutes of volunteer work, the proposed initiative will have a larger impact as it is part of a bigger programme.
