Tapas time! Pairing snacks and wine in Stellenbosch
For Stellenbosch local, Jeanneret Momberg, you can’t beat a lazy evening or long lunch with friends under the oaks. Even better if you’re sharing a selection of small plates, bite-size nibbles and a wonderful bottle of wine. Pairing snacks and wine in Stellenbosch has been elevated to an art form of mouth-watering proportions – and Jeanneret is happy to share. Here are her top picks if you’re in the mood to indulge!
Brampton Wine Studio
Brampton is well-known for its selection of award-winning wine, but if you haven’t visited their Wine Studio in the heart of Stellenbosch, then you are definitely in for a treat. This unique urban winery on historic Church Street, in the vibey restaurant district, serves up delectable snacks and tapas as well as their legendary flatbreads. The fare is fresh, seasonal and bursting with flavour. Settle in with your friends – or get competitive and sign up for one of their quiz nights. You’re in for a night of great food, great company and plenty of laughter!
Love Wine
Staying in central Stellenbosch, Love Wine is always worth a visit. As the ‘village base’ for premium wine estates around Stellenbosch, you can enjoy a varied wine tasting as well as a selection of snacks, poke bowls and platters. Pair a poke bowl with a glass of bubbly, a charcuterie board with a Kaapzicht Pinotage Rosé or simply tuck into the region’s best biltong as you share stories over a full-bodied bottle of red.
Spek en Bone
Bertus Basson (of Overture and Eike fame) never disappoints, and his newest venture, Spek en Bone is no exception. Tucked away in a cosy corner just off Dorp street, behind Oom Samie se Winkel, this small plates eatery and wine bar is definitely one of Stellenbosch’s hidden gems.
You’ll love its charming courtyard, the chance to kuier under a leafy vine – and its menu of honest, flavourful, seasonal dishes elevated by Bertus’s culinary magic. Spek en Bone is a joyful celebration of life in Stellenbosch, right down to the name of the restaurant itself, which is named after the Basson family’s pig and puppy, Spek and Bone, who according to Bertus are “best friends and truly inseparable”.
The plates are meant for sharing and when paired with great wine and Bertus’s playlist, snacks and wine in Stellenbosch don’t get much better than this!
Peter Falke Wines
You’ll find Peter Falke Wines on Groenvlei Farm, on Annandale Road, just outside Stellenbosch. Grab a table under an umbrella in their beautiful ‘outdoor lounge’ and relax with sundowner as you gaze across their vineyards and onwards to the majestic Helderberg Mountains.
This boutique winery is a love letter to Danièle Falke’s birthplace of Provence in the South of France, and you’ll delight in the rambling bougainvillea, abundant roses and wild lavender growing alongside their sweeping vineyards.
It’s the perfect spot for a glass of wine. Grab a few friends and enjoy one of their cheese platters, complete with preserves, seasonal fresh fruits, ciabatta and butter. Or opt for the charcuterie option, a delectable feast of Parma ham , Mortadella, Coppa, salami and chicken liver pâté served with fresh ciabatta and butter.
The next few months promise sunny days and long, warm evenings with friends. Just make sure they are filled with snacks and wine in Stellenbosch!
