Exploring the great outdoors in the Cape Winelands

Day 1

Premium coffee at Bootleggers

Who could imagine starting off a day of thrills and energetic adventure without a cup of coffee first? When it comes to the perfect brew, you can’t go wrong with Bootlegger Coffee Company, a popular cyclist hangout found on Ryneveld Street. From a sweet and creamy honey nut latte to a buzz-inducing Americano, there are plenty of coffee creations to choose from. Enjoy your cuppa with a generous slice of freshly baked banana bread or fill up with a balanced breakfast, such as steel-cut oats or the all-new BootBun.

Next you need to decide between Segways and scooters! If you’d prefer the former, then make your way to Spier Wine Farm.

Spier’s Segway Tours

A Segway is a two-wheeled, self-balancing device that is rather easy to get the hang of. No worries if you’ve never ridden one before as each tour starts with a simple training session. You will quickly agree that a Segway is the perfect way to explore the expansive Spier Wine Farm!

Currently, there are three different tours to consider:

• Spier Farm Tour @ R375. Duration 1 hour (no children under 10)
• Vineyard Tour @ R575. Duration 2 hours (no children under 12)
• Sunset Tour @ R700. Duration 2 hours (no children under 12)

Following your Segway exploit, be sure to pop into the Spier Farm Café for a light lunch, the Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery for something a little more substantial or relax in the sunshine with a seasonal picnic next to the dam. If you are keen on a laid-back picnic, remember to bring your own chairs, cushions, and blankets along (there are also some available for hire) and book your basket in advance. Alternatively, select your preferred picnic nibbles on arrival and grab yourself some Spier wine as the finishing touch – now available in a can!

Finally, top off the blissful experience with a wine tasting while the kids explore the Elemental garden.

If you’d prefer to tour the town on a scooter, a Scootours adventure is the way to go.

Scootours and lunch at Postcard Café

Scootours allows you to buzz through the picturesque Jonkershoek Reserve – a hidden gem in Stellenbosch – on the back of a Monster Mountain® Scooter. The tour is guided and is suitable for the entire family. Younger kids between the ages of 4 – 9 years simply ride with their parents. Breathe in the mountain-fresh air, savour the surrounding natural beauty, and just enjoy time spent with loved ones.

You will have definitely worked up a sizeable appetite following your Scootour, so your next stop should be the Postcard Café at Stark-Conde Wines for a mouth-watering meal with a view. The café is so-named because it is as “pretty as a postcard”. It is best-known for its breakfasts, afternoon tea, and quintessentially South African dishes, including butter chicken curry and pork mince bobotie.

Once you have put an end to that grumbling stomach, why not take a carefree stroll along the beautiful walkway towards the tasting room in the middle of the dam, and treat yourself to a wine tasting?

Day 2

Grab breakfast at Café Furlough

Café Furlough is both charming and stylish, offering a modern take on the classic sit-down breakfast experience. Sit outside and soak up the morning rays for a sun-kissed glow, all while sipping on a creamy coffee and tucking into a meal that looks just as glorious as it tastes. Think kale and chevin scramble, an artichoke and mosbolletjie, or a selection of croissants with an array of gourmet fillings.

Explore wine farms on an e-bike

Make the most of the remaining morning hours with a 3.5-hour e-bike tour through some of the region’s best-loved wine farms. Vinebikes Stellenbosch offers two route options. The first departs from Banhoek Lodge and takes you to Thelema Mountain Vineyards, Zorgvliet Wine Estate, and Oldenburg Vineyards. The second departs from the Lanzerac E-Bike Trail Centre and takes you to Lanzerac Wine Estate, Rustenburg Wines, and Stark-Conde Wines. The best news? All of the e-bikes come equipped with wine saddle bags for secure and easy transport should you decide to purchase a bottle or two.

The guided e-bike tours are great for solo travellers, couples, and families alike. There are kids bike seats available for kids between the ages of 3 – 5, as well as half bikes for kids between the ages of 6 – 10.
