AboveThe only birdie you should see when hurtling down the lush green fairways of the golf courses in Stellenbosch is one in the hole. So, grab your golf bag and take your best swing as we bring you the top 3 courses in Stellenbosch to channel your inner Ernie Els.
But first, let’s introduce you to Stellenbosch. South Africa’s second-oldest town delivers a rich historic and cultural experience. Leafy oak trees, thanks to Simon van der Stel centuries ago, line the town’s streets. This is a place that pays homage to its past but is also passionate about its future as a dynamic, youthful hub of innovation.
For avid golfers – amateur or pro – there are three golf courses in Stellenbosch on offer: Stellenbosch Golf Club, De Zalze Golf Club and Devonvale Golf Course.
Stellenbosch Golf Club
This fine establishment has been open for over a hundred years, making it the 4th oldest golf course in South Africa. It really is a sporting institution. In 1953 it was expanded from a 9-hole to an 18-hole championship course. A round or two here will put you in the shoes of the greats as it has hosted big tournaments like the South African Open. If you are looking for coaching, workshops or a pro shop, this is the place.
De Zalze Golf Club
Situated on the incredibly beautiful De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate, this 18-hole course (pro) will not only take your breath away, but it will also challenge you mentally and physically. No matter your skill level, you’ll find a course right for you – there are colour co-ordinated courses for everyone from pro to first-timers (shorter course). They have a clubhouse, bars and restaurants, a spot to get in a few test swings, chips or putts before your game as well as pro coaches for a few tips.
Devonvale Golf Course
One word – world-famous, do we need to go on? Devonvale Golf Course has hosted several local and international golf aficionados over the years. A 6136m, par 72, 18 hole Championship course is a true test of your skills. And right in the middle of the course, there is an amazing little dam. The driving range and practice area cater to all ages and they also offer private sessions. Above all, special mention is made of their 5-star change rooms for ladies and gents, and spectacular refreshment facilities.
If you feel like taking your golf prowess just beyond Stellenbosch, you can also head to a driving range in Somerset West, Somerset West Golf Village or Strand, Erinvale and Somerset West Golf courses or the Kuilsrivier Golf Course.
