Wednesday Art Talkabout | Finding Refuge: Ruth Carneson
Aug 11 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
The Stellenbosch University Museum invites you to a Wednesday Art Talkabout with Ruth Carneson and Nancy Richards, in conversation about Ruth Carneson’s life and art.
At fourteen, Ruth left South Africa on her own, clutching her teddy bear in one hand and a roll of her drawings in the other.
In the UK, she struggled to reconstruct a life fractured by fear but found a much-needed refuge in artmaking. Her creativity helped her deal with the trauma of growing up in Apartheid South Africa, where her parents had been harassed and imprisoned.
In 1991 it was possible for Ruth to return home to South Africa. For ten years she lived on Robben Island where she continued to make art. On Robben Island Ruth found a safe place, a place that she could call home.
Her art has been both a refuge and a way of making sense of the world.
